Majority of conventional cargo is transported in general purpose hermetic containers of 20- and 40-feet length. Cargo may be packed in bags, FIBCs, boxes, cases or in a different way. Cargo can be on pallets or loaded in bulk. In the first case, cargo can be loaded or unloaded much faster using a lift truck.
Up to 22 gross tons can be loaded into a general purpose 20-feet container, up to 25-26 gross tons – in a 40-feet container.
Freight of hazardous cargo, liquid cargo and temperature-controlled cargo is also often required.
CONTAINER FREIGHT OF HAZARDOUS CARGO
Hazardous cargo can be of 9 hazard ratings. Such cargo always has a special shipping document, i.e. safety data sheet, which certifies to which hazard rating one or another cargo is assigned. The hazard rating determines how such cargo must be packed, stored, what are the specifics of its safe transportation.
Sea transport is the best for hazardous cargo long-haul traffic, as the railway hardly approves such cargo.

CONTAINER FREIGHT OF LIQUID CARGO
Liquid cargo is also successfully transported in containers. For this purpose, a special flexible tank, so cold flexitank which is a large polymer bag, is installed in a container. Only non-hazardous cargo, both food, e.g. canola oil or wine-making materials, and non-hazardous chemicals may be transported in this way.
CONTAINER FREIGHT OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED CARGO
Frozen and chilled products, fruits, medications – all must be transported in special reefer containers. Such containers maintain constant pre-set temperature from –25 to +25°C during the entire route. Reefer containers must be used even for transportation of cargo that requires temperature up to +25°C, as in the course of ocean freight the ambient temperature, e.g. at the equator, can reach 50°C and higher.
