It can be done by road (usually faster, but more expensive). Or it can be done by rail, which is often cheaper than road transport. On the plus side, the cargo quickly crosses the border if all documents are in order. On the downside, railway platforms may remain on the tracks for some time due to various reasons - congestion at transport hubs, waiting for higher priority cargo to be processed.
